Winter Moon was actually a pretty simple story. A good bit less mature than Strangers and Coldfire (two very complex and quite captivating books). It had some suspense toward the end but was, otherwise, not very overwhelming. This is the one that was written way, way back under the pen name Aaron Wolfe and was straight sci-fi. Later, when he sat down to do some updating of the story for re-publication, he found that he had virtually changed the entire story.

I reread Winter Moon and was captivated once again by the simple story of good vs. evil. While the story does not contain the complexities of his later work, it is a good bedtime story to read to the grandchildren on those cold stormy nights. (heh-heh) I thought the alien was Wholy Alien without contrast or similarity to known reality. A mark of genius to captivate a thing so incapable of understanding the humanity of earth! And you know that if there is a dog in a Koontz, it's a Golden Retriever and it is the real hero! dh |

I thought this one was pretty wild. Scared me a little when the alien came, even more when he was confronted by it. Ending leaves you with that duh, duh, duuuuh feeling like there could be a sequel, but you know there wouldn't be because there wouldn't be anything different in it. It was cool how the son was incorperated into the last third of the book and the creepy changes in him. It actually made me feel like I was in the middle of a snowstorm, but I read it last August.

I had a really hard time finding a copy of this one. The two bookstores I usually use seemed to never have a copy. But I finally found it at a used books place and I am glad I did. I thought it was an awesome read. One of my favorite things about the book was the McGarveys seemed more like a real life married couple, well except for the arsenal of weapons they had on hand. But there wasnt the usual koontz banter and teasing between the two and as I usually get a kick out of some of DKs "couples" it was good to get a break from that. This book was great. 4 out of 5 stars.
