Personally, I think it's a total cop-out.

She didn't mention it before the series was over for the SOLE reason that it would have decreased sales.

Now, she said this as a total push of her political agenda...if she wants to use her work for that fine...but at least have the cajones to do it when it could actually affect you in some way. She now seems to be doing it just to make a point and water people off on her way out the door.

As for me, I could care less if he's gay. However, I wouldn't be reading a series of books about a gay wizard...just wouldn't appeal to me. One of the reasons I think it's ridiculous that she said this is that there is never any mention of him being gay...so it's pointless to call him gay or not.

Granted I've only read two books, but I've seen what the rest of you posted...so if Dumbledore doesn't engage in or discuss any relationship straight or gay...then what does it matter.

The Dumbledore I'm reading about is straight...just because that's what I've had in my head and Rowling hasn't told me anything different thus far in the books. To be quite honest though...his sexual preference has crossed my mind during the first two books a total of 0 times.

It's just not relevant to the story...another reason why J.K. Rowling claiming that he's gay is totally political and makes me lose respect for her. Good thing I don't really care and can't wait to read books 3 - 7.

It doesn't matter, which is the point. Some people treat sexuality like it's a big deal, therefore they react to this revelation as if it totally changes the character, but I know for a fact that being gay is only a small part of what makes a person who they are, and therefore the revelation changes nothing of what we already know of the character.

I'm not necessarily saying it doesn't matter...if she had written the character gay and it was possible to tell that from the books...that's one thing.

But to come out and say it later...I just think there are ulterior motives.

That's why I can totally dismiss it while reading the books...because she didn't write him gay...despite what she's now claiming.

Maybe it's something only another writer can understand, but I often know things about my characters that never make it into the stories. I create histories for them, but the info that doesn't really fit or isn't relevant, I just keep in my own head but dont' put down on the page. She was asked a direct question about Dumbledore's love life, so it isn't like she just announced it for no reason, she was answering a specific question. And actually, since the series ended, she has often given out information about characters that weren't in the book, a whole history for Dean that never got revealed, but no one went crazy over that sh*t, only this, because people think being gay is a bigger deal than it is. Not saying you, just in general.
