I just finished the book Cross. Very good book. First JP book I have read.
The question I have is where did little Ali come from? Jannie was a little baby and she had just told Alex she was pregnant when she was killed. A couple of chapters later, he has THREE kids.
Confusing!

Thanks!!!

I've stopped reading Patterson because he is terrible, but I believe I can answer your question.

Ali is his wife, she died before the series even started. He's probably having a flashback or it's important to that book. It explains it in earlier books.

CROSS is the most recent book in the Alex Cross series, and Snowman is right about the flashback. Although he's too hard on Patterson, his books are mostly good fun.

You're killing me, breezit.

I've read 10 of his books, I think that is good enough.

You're better than me snowman, I read three I believe, and just couldn't stomach anymore. I do understand why they appeal to people in that they are very fast-paced, but they achieve that pace at the expense of things like characterization, detail, setting, depth. That bare-bones style seems lazy to me, because you can have a fast pace AND an in-depth story without two-page chapters if you work at it, but Patterson seems to take the easiest way out. Which is his perogative, it just isn't something I can respect.

Hey, different strokes for different folks.

I think King once described his books as the equivalent of a Big Mac and fries, and I actually think that's actually a better description of Patterson's work. I think Patterson's stuff is ideal for light reading.

Obviously he is doing something write. And there is much he does on the business end that he has every right to do and more power to him, just on a personal level I dont' respect it so that also taints my veiw of him.

Ali is his son from another relationship. It talks about him in previous books.

Yes. It's all about the gore. There is no substance.

I actually hear the more recent Alex Cross books -- MARY MARY, CROSS and DOUBLE CROSS -- are quite good, and improvements on clunkers like LONDON BRIDGES.

I'll probably read it soon. It will be my first Cross, 2nd Patterson, but I think it will be fine even after the grueling False Memory.

Why read something mediocre with thrills when you can read something great with thrills?

The one Cross novel I read was better than the two non-Cross novels I read, but overall I found his style so preschool that I couldn't justify continuing reading him.

I got my hair cut yesterday evening, and the stylist at SUPERCUTS told me she was an avid reader. She even had a book in her purse. Guess what she pulled out? DOUBLE CROSS by James Patterson.

The power of Patterson -- don't underestimate it.

No doubt he's popular, there's no doubting that, a lot of people who don't normally read read him because his books are so fast and untaxing.

I too was confused, but remembered in the back of my mind that he had Alex Jr. by a school teacher. According to Patterson's offical site, however, she has custody of the kid in California, I believe, but in this book, he has him. I guess I missed a book in between. Can someone fill me in on what book he got custody of Alex?

Also, I have to agree about Patterson's writing style. The "Cross," I was disappointed, and don't thing he developed the Sullivan character correctly. It's like he went to the beach and banged the book out in three days! I just didn't like the bowing and the "He's that good," comment made by Sullivan's minion a couple times. It just made the character look foolish.
