according to ken follett

In Chapter One of 'Pillars', which takes place in 1135, Martha is seven years old. The last time she appears in the book is at the wedding of Jack and Aliena, in Chapter Sixteen, which takes place in 1155, so she must be 27. She is mentioned later in the book, especially when characters are recalling the events of 1135, but nothing is said about her romantic life. It is hinted that she may harbour a secret love for Jack, who is of course her stepbrother. So I think we may imagine that, after the wedding, she may at last have fallen in love with someone and had children in her late twenties or thirties.

After all her descendant is a main character in the sequel.

I happened to turn on the tv today and Ken Follett was on Oprah. It seems Pillars was a bookclub pick of hers. Most likely the interview is on her site somewhere but I haven't checked.
Follett said the working title of the book was "Vaulting" but changed it because he thought people would think it was about pole-vaulting. He ended up getting "Pillars" from a bible quote.

I am rather surprised she raved about it as much as she did, it doesn't seem like the kind of book she would enjoy, mainly because of the numerous sex/rape scenes and the way Tom treated his wife and the baby at the beginning of the book.

I'm glad I read it before she put her "stamp of approval" on it, in that case I may have intentionally passed it by. I usually make a point to not read something because a celeb says it good, it's not the word of god.

WOOHOO!! They are making a mini-series based on the book.

THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH

During a civil war, a famine and religious strife, a magnificent cathedral rises in Kingsbridge. Based on the bestselling novel by Ken Follett, this is the story of the intertwining lives of a master builder, a noblewoman, the Prior of Kingsbridge, an artist and a woman from the forest who casts a spell. In association with CBC, this Movie Central and The Movie Network original series is a co-production of Muse Entertainment and Tandem Communications with the association of Scott Free Films Ltd., with an outstanding international ensemble cast that includes Ian McShane (Deadwood, Kings), Donald Sutherland (Dirty Sexy Money, Cold Mountain) and Rufus Sewell (The Eleventh Hour, The Illusionist). The Pillars of the Earth is directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (Battlestar Galactica, Heroes), written by John Pielmeier (The Memory Keeper's Daughter, Agnes of God) and executive produced by Michael Prupas and Rola Bauer with producer John Ryan. Currently in pre-production.
