Yeah...I enjoyed this plotline, too...I loved that they could only be seen by people who witnessed a death...creepy!!

I have another question...in the end Harry was desperate to talk to Sirius again through that mirror that he found then when he couldn't he got mad. Can't he get a portrait of Sirius and talk to him through that? All of the dead former headmasters are pretty talkative in Dumbledore's office and the portraits around Hogwarts are always chatting...why can't Harry get a portrait of Sirius and talk to him that way? What are the rules for portraits...has JKR ever said?

Actually, didn't Harry see his parents die? I always wondered why that didn't count. Maybe you have to be old enough to realize what you're seeing.

Maybe the portraits only work for headmasters, I don't think it's ever explained. Maybe the headmasters don't fully move on but have to hang around to help out at the school. Then again, some other portraits talked, so I don't know.

Not to mention he witnessed Quirrell die in the first book. Actually, I'm pretty sure that didn't count. He was passed out by the time it happened. So yeah, you probably have to be able to comprehend it at a certain level for it to work.

I think the portraits talk, but they only have limited capabilities. They don't have memories of their pasts. Sir Cadogan displays his main thing as a pest.

I think they have memories of their pasts...all of the Headmasters seem to...and Sirius's mother definitely remembers that she's an old hag...etc.

I'm assuming from the answers that the "portrait of Sirius" issue is never really brought up...that's kind of disappointing...it just seems logical to me.

Oh well.

That sounds right to me...

harry only seen his mother die as his father was killed on the stairs and he was in his crib in his bedroom with his mother and the door was closed it was his mother that was killed infront of him, he did see quirrel die as he didnt pass out untill quirrel was dust on the floor and voldermort flew through him, and he also see's cedric die in the goblet of fire. And as for getting a portrait of sirius i dont know why that never happend, unless a maybe you had to have had one made whie you were alive and he never did, but it is not just the paintings in hogworts that move it is also the painting in the prime ministers office that informs him of the arrival of the minister of magic in the half blood prince, the first chapter.
