I thought he managed in the two books I previously mentioned to actually cut back on the clinical feel of his writing and get a bit more emotion into his prose. Not sure how to explain it better than that, but it's like he became aware of his own weaknesses and really worked on not making his writing so distancing for the reader. Plus, lost girl lost boy is a really creepy ghost story, and In the Night Room has a really loopy plot I enjoyed. Those aren't the only two books I've ever enjoyed by him, The Hellfire Club I really enjoyed at the time although it wasn't quite so memorable as a lot has faded since I read it, and Shadowlands was a decent book if a bit overdone.
Oh, and don't worry about it, glad to be of service. just know that my opinions are just that, my opinions, and you may feel very differently when you read Straub. |

Cool, well i will recomend those novels to her then. Since she has Ghost Story from the library, that will give her a dose of one of his older books and see how she feels about it, and then get a dose of one of the better ones(in your opinion), and see how she feels about that one.
Just between me and you, she denies it left and right, but i dont think she puts as much importance on characters as a lot of us, myself included do, lol. |

Ghost Story is considered his best, but I've tried to read it several times and can never get through it. One of these days I'm going to force my way through it; who knows, maybe I'll even finally see what the big deal is.

Heh, then in that case, if she likes it, i will pick on of his other older books that arent considered his best so she can have a taste of his good and bad sides, unless of course she ends up with the same problem you had with Ghost Story, lol.

Sometimes opinions can change. I read Shadowlands when I was younger and didn't like it, I reread it last year as part of a book club and appreciated it more, although I still feel it was overdone and his writing was too clinical, almost building a wall between me and the characters.
