Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, as a moderator there are some responsibilities that take precedence. The main one of those is to calm tense situations when something is going beyond debate and differing opinions. Additionally, it includes an effort to be impartial when someone comes to you with a complaint. Every one who has been a moderator here over the years has at one time or another failed to separate their own opinions and/or emotions in a situation as a moderator. It is not an easy thing to do or a delicate balance to strike what to one person seems out of hand seems fine to someone else, where do you draw the line of something that needs to be diffused.
There has been a forum specifically available only to the moderators and administrators for quite some time for us to discuss exactly those sorts of issues. With this particular moderator, there have been many private discussions about his tendency to escalate situations rather than calm them. Additionally about five months ago there was a talk about an incident in which he publically placed blame on a moderator for a call that was made on handling a thread that was taking some nasty turns, rather than discussing the situation in the moderator forum. Both of these behaviors that are not appropriate for an acting moderator have continued. What I suppose you could call the final straw in that situation resulted in the forum being locked until things could be sorted out. Unfortunately, the sequence of what people saw happen publicly has led them to think that the primary problems are around people having different political opinions and/or being offended by what some one else had to say.

Well, hopefully tempers will cool and many of the now-absent forum members will return. I've seen quite a few forums self-destruct over politics and overheated rhetoric, I'd hate to see the same thing happen to this forum, which is one of the most civil ones I've seen.

I've had some problems with a few posters, but for the most part we've made peace and gone on. I must have really missed all this that lead to people defecting. Who's left us?

I don't know that anyone's left for good, but there have been a few that have moved to different places.
