I thought anyone can do a "companion" book on an author. It's not new fiction, just reivews, explanations and background stuff. I maybe wrong. I think the controversy is that she encouraged the website and now she's suing.

Exactly, a lot of companion books have been done "unauthorized." It isn't using the characters in new fiction. I am kind of upset that Rowling is doing this, because if she wins it will change the copywrite laws and kill that type of book, the companion book. I really believe she's only doing it because of her own Potter Encyclopedia she's planning, but I doubt this one would cut into her sales, because if people have a choice, they are going to choose the one she does herself, if you ask me.

Just a couple of quick comments about the denoument to this utter masterpiece.

I loved that DH was a "quest" that Harry, Ron, and Hermoine got to embark on together. I agree with Snowman...I wish it was about 3 times the final length...I want more searching for horcruxes and more drawn out obstacles, etc to get to them.

I liked that even though Dumbledore was dead...he (and his memory/life) still played a huge role in this book.

I can't believe that Rowling was able to take Harry from utterly despising Snape whom he hated even before he killed Dumbledore to naming his children after him...crazy. Reminds me of the feeling I got in POA when Harry goes from wanting to kill Sirius to being overwhelmed to find out that he has "family". Of course it wasn't quite the same thing because I don't think Snape ever really loved Harry.

The Malfoys should have been killed or imprisoned...preferably killed. However
I guess I can't complain too much because 4 out of 6 people who I REALLY wanted dead after HBP are dead. Lucius and Draco are the exceptions.

My least favorite ongoing character/storyline was Luna Lovegood...I could have done without all of her scenes. I felt that she added nothing to the group or books and I wish she would have been left out.

I heard from a friend of mine that the epilogue was originally a couple hundred pages but that the editor made Rowling cut it to 19. I don't know if it's true or not, but if it is...then I want to know why in the world she let the editors tell her to cut it short. I think after selling more books than anyone...ever...you should be able to write and publish exactly what you want. So, does anybody know if that is true...and if so is there anywhere that you can read the "real" epilogue...the train station scene wasn't enough for me.

I'm glad you liked it so much Einstein, it is my favorite series I've ever read. I thought the final book was uneven at times, but overall I thought it was incredibly satsifying. And I liked that she didn't "trick" us and have Doubledore alive, I even thought for a minute she was "tricking" us about Mad Eye, but death was final for these people, and I appreciated that.
