...Staying on topic here, I'd like to know what exactly is a "variator" and why the big deal over the inclusion of one on a moped (the TFR USA)?

If you've ever ridden a beach cruiser on anything but level ground, you will quickly understand.

They are hard as hell to pedal up hills.

On the other hand, a multi speed bike like amountain bike has various gear ratios to suit the terrain.

A variatior does the ratio selection automatically, giving more torque to climb hills without straining the motor or you having to pedal.

A variator equpped ped will probably last longer than a single speed whose engine has no advantage of gearing.

Ah, I see, much like the CVT transmissions in cars. Is the moped variator operated by a system of pulleys?

Just one pulley and belt that varies the distance of the angled sides from each other as speed increases or decreases by means of centrifugal force operating upon weights and rollers. As the distance varies between the `belt riding surface' sides, the belt moves up or down, varying the ratio. Very ingenious system.

The only catch is,besides rollers wearing out or sticking, that the engine must allow slack and be spring-loaded in its mounting, or there must be a slack removing pulley to keep the correct tension on the belt as the belt rides up or down inside the variator pulley. WHEW! Not bad for a crazy man,eh?  don-ohio

Wow, that sounds rather intricate, but makes total sense. I remember the Subaru Justy being one of the first cars in the U.S. introduced with the CVT (continuously variable transmission), back in about 1988. It was a pretty big deal at the time. Is a variator a big deal for mopeds? I'm sorry for all the inane questioning, but this is all rather new to me...
