I love all of Dean Koontz's books, and I occasionaly read a Stepen King. Has anyone else noticed that if a Dean Koontz book is made into a movie, it is mediocre - horrible, and if a Stephen King book is made into a movie it is good - excellent? Eg Watchers vs Green Mile. What are your opinions as to why????
(Dean Koontz's books are better of course!) |

I think a lot of it just has to do with popularity and noteriety. King is a household name and probably the most successful writer of all time. As much as I love Koontz, he is nowhere near King as far as book sales and being known the world over. Everyone has heard of Stephen King, even people who have never read a book in their life. Probably even little old grandmas. Thus, a lot more money can be put into movies based on his books (better writers, better actors, better production), because studios know that with the King name on it, the movie will do well. I don't know, I may be wrong. Good question.

Part of it is that a writer has little control over how book to movies turn out. They write the book and then sell the movie rights, and have little or no involvement after that. King does get into the movie part of things, he writes some of his own scripts, such as Rose Red and Storm of the Century. But it seems that Koontz has learned his lesson and said in his FAQs newsletter that he will have a bigger hand in things. He said most of the movies based on his books have been crap, but that there were some decent parts in some of them such as Soul Survivor and Intensity. (By the way this is just from what I can remember, I could be off on the details here.) If anyone wants me to, I'll type out what he said about his movies. |

I think that Stephen King's books make better movies because his stories are "simpler" (for lack of a better word - and not to be taken as an insult to any King fans!) whereas Koontz books are more "complex" and more about the characters and their reactions to things - if that makes sense. Of course, that's just my opinion and Dustin, I would love to hear what Dean had to say about the movies made of his books. Thanks.

Dustin,
I would love to hear what Dean Koontz has said about his movies. Who better to hear it from than the man himself!!! I think maybe the reason is a mixture of all of the above. Thanks everyone for your opinions, I hadn't considered half of the things you have written. Thanks a Bunch! |
