My dreaming of late has become quite bizarre to the point where it now concerns me. I've been able to lucid dream since I was around ten years old (I'm now mid-twenties), the trigger always being that I was in a nightmare. I soon learnt to end my dreams if something bad was happening in them.
It used to be the case that, when I'm dreaming, the thought occurs to me 'am I dreaming?' and this was enough for me to become immediately lucid. Lately, however, this hasn't been enough for me to trigger lucidity. It seems that asking this question in my dreams now forces the dream to be entirely as vivid and convincing as real life, as far as my mind is concerned. I don't know if this is a loss of lucidity or a weakening of it, for me. On one occasion where I was unable to discern if I was dreaming, I tried to end the dream to ascertain it and, of course, the dream ended. So there is certainly some level lucidity, but it's not like I used to be. Lately, I've been remembering tons of dreams like this, where I am unable distinguish my dream from reality (and loads more dreams besides). An ever-present theme in these dreams is flying/trying to fly, and when I question if this is dream-content, I am soon convinced that flying is an everyday thing, for me. Any insights would be helpful (and relieving) |

Hi there,
It is pretty great that you have been able to Lucid Dream since you were 13 years old. Many people try very hard to attain what you were able to do naturally. However if this technique is no longer working how about you try something else. One technique is to use your hands as a trigger. ie. before you fall asleep look at your hands and repeat that when you are in your dream and you see your hands it will trigger the recognition that you are dreaming. Do this for a few minutes and then once you fall asleep and are in your dream and look at your hands you should become lucid. If you want more tips on attaining lucidity check out www.realmeaningofdreams.com they have some info on lucidity. Good luck! |

Thanks for your suggestion pegasus :) Sadly, however, I've already tried this. When this thing started (a couple of months ago) I googled about lucid dreaming and read about some techniques for attaining lucidity, and looking at your hands was one of the first techniques I read about. I tried it, and it worked the first time - the hands in my dream were webbed, so I knew they weren't mine. The second time I tried it, they looked like my hands and when I looked away from my hands because I was still unsure whether I was dreaming or not, I found myself placed in a very familiar town centre, convincing myself even further that I wasn't dreaming. I don't think those techniques are going to work for me, as I feel like my brain is working against me.
On a side-note, I didn't say I was thirteen when I first reached lucidity. In fact, I must have been a few years younger than that, because when I first did it, I was living in a house I moved out of when I was ten/eleven years old (year 5-6 at school). |
