I have some serious doubts as to whether someone can actually create the ability to control their dreams at will.

How many of you can actually control your dreams?

How many of you have tried and failed?

I for one have tried and cannot seems to do it. I would really like to learn how.

Becky,

They are absolutely real, but it takes some preparation to start having them.

The main obstacle is that mind thinks that what surrounds us is real, even when it's not - this happens in regular dreams.

Developing the "question reality" awareness can help you become lucid in your dreams.

During the day, became aware of strange things that happen, such as:
1) A sound which comes out of nowhere.
2) Someone saying or doing a weird thing.
3) Unusual lightning.
4) Meeting someone that you have not seen for ages.
5) An unexpected coincidence.
etc

Each time something like this happens, do a "dream check" - there are several foolprof ways to know if you are awake or dreaming.
The easiest is to stare at your hand for 10 seconds or so - in a dream it may be fuzzy or have wrong number of fingers.
If you wear a watch, focus on it for a while - watches and clocks do not work correctly in a dream.

Eventually the dream checking will become a habit and you will start doing it when you dream too, which will allow you to become aware and go lucid.
