if your carb has 2 mixture screws, the one that is closest to the engine is low speed idle mixture. the one that farthest away is high speed idle mixture. you should start at about 1 1/2 turns out with each one, set the high speed first, then do the low speed.
if it only has one mixture screw, set it at 1 1/2 turns out, then slowly adjust until the engine runs good at both high and low speeds. if your carb has no mixture screws, then you need to order a rebuild kit, and go through the carb more thoroughly. use a small piece of wir and poke it through every hole. follow this up with blasts of carb cleaner in every hole. look at all the aluminum welch plugs that are pressed into the carb body and make sure none of them move. if one does, search e-bay for a new carb. if none of what I described helps, then you have an air leak some where in the engine block. check the intake where it mounts to the engine, make sure the head bolts are tight. make sure the cylinder base gasket is not blown out. and if all that checks out then you probably need new crank seals. you can test all the gaskets by small blasrs of carb cleaner on them as the engine runs. any change in rpm tells you that there is a leak in that area that is causing what was described. |
