I've always told people that what affects me emotionally about a character's death in a book or movie often isn't the death itself but the way others react to it, their grief. I watched Pay it Forward--which wasn't a great movie--but there was a death at the end that made me cry, but it wasn't the death itself, it was watching another character bawling that brought me to tears.

I spent most of the book thinking, don't get too attached to this one, he's getting killed. But when it happened it was still a shock because it was a precise moment whe you think they are out of danger. It was also effective to clarify the conflict within the Hogwarts community. If the Slytherins couldn't bring themselves to honor this guy's death, there's no redemption for them. |

I saw most of the movie last weekend. I hated what they did with Barty Crouch story. It was supposed to be heartbreaking at the beginning, and a huge surprize at the end, but in the movie you knew exactly what's going on. And Winky wasn't even there!!!

THey did have to cut a lot out of this one, but I thought overall it still worked. The OotP movie, however, I felt they cut too much that was too important. THe prophecy stuff was glossed over in a way that I thought would be confusing to people who hadn't read the books, and they even cut the kids finding the locket at Sirus's house at the beginning, and that becomes incredibly important in the final book.
