Great book by William Forstchen. It tells of a small North Carolina town and how they cope when a nuclear bomb is detonated above America's atmosphere. The nuclear fallout is no threat that high up, but the bomb sends an EMP that blankets the nation, destroying everything with a computer in it.

Chaos ensues as society is thrown back several centuries. Illness, starvation, and raiding hordes of cannibals are among the worries that face our protagonist, his family, and his community.

This is a work of fiction, but the forward and afterword tell how many in our government feel this is a distinct possibility. Furthermore, they warn that America is poorly prepared to handle an attack of this nature. With North Korea launching their "communications rocket" recently, this novel strikes home even more.

Very good character development, and apparently a very well-researched scenario. It's scary to read what could become the future of our country and how dependent we have become on technology.

I'm far from the world's biggest conspiracy nut, but this book scared the crap out of me.

One Second After is a 2009 fiction novel by American writer William R. Forstchen. The novel deals with an unexpected electromagnetic pulse attack on the United States as it affects the people living in and around the small American town of Black Mountain, North Carolina.
The story's focus shifts quickly to how the community, as a whole, reacts. Matherson is a respected outsider, and his military experience, standing as collegiate professor, and level-headedness are appreciated by the town's residents.
